Judy Kafelghazal, MD (Central Michigan University)

I grew up in Franklin, MI and moved to Ann Arbor to get my undergraduate degree in Neuroscience at the University of Michigan. Growing up as a child of Syrian immigrants, I connected with the Arab population on campus and enjoyed my time doing Dabke. After graduation, I went to Central Michigan University to get my MD and quickly discovered my passion for providing well-rounded care to the pediatric population. In my free time, you'll find me exploring different restaurants with my soon-to-be husband, Jalal, snuggled up on the couch watching movies or reading a book with my cats, Comet and Nova, or working on my crochet residency temperature blanket! I have enjoyed my experience so far at UMICH Peds and am so excited to be a Chief Resident!

I grew up just outside of Ann Arbor in the small town of Clinton. I then completed my undergraduate degree at Michigan State University in Human Biology, with minors in Global Public Health and Epidemiology. I continued my time as a Spartan at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine in Grand Rapids. I am ecstatic to be continuing my training at U of M, now as a “Spartarine” (MSU Spartan-U of M Wolverine)! In my free time I enjoy traveling, hiking, biking, lake life, reading, listening to podcasts, and most of all- spending time with my husband and our son!

Paola Werner, DO (Midwestern University)

My family and I moved from Bulgaria to the suburbs of Chicago when I was seven years old. I stayed in Chicago throughout my education, completing my undergraduate degree at the University of Illinois with a major in Biological Sciences and a minor in French. While there, I volunteered with Ronald McDonald House Charities and Peer Health Exchange, which sparked my interest in pediatrics and education. After graduating, I completed a Master of Biomedical Science degree at Midwestern University, where I later continued my education in medical school. Eventually, the time came to leave Chicago for residency.  I have loved the experience of living in Ann Arbor and being a part of our program. Beyond medicine, I enjoy cooking, baking, reading, exploring new destinations, and spending quality time with my husband and two cats. After residency, I am pursuing a fellowship in Allergy and Immunology. I am excited to have the opportunity to contribute to our program as chief and hope to continue advocating for positive changes to benefit resident education and wellness.
