Cecilia Gallego Suarez, M.D.

Medical School: Universidad del Valle de Mexico Facultad de Medici (MX)
Residency: University of Michigan

Research Interests:
My research interests have evolved throughout fellowship. For a long time, I have been interested in understanding the role of nutritional status in pediatric critical illness, specifically, investigate the effect of malnutrition (both underweight and obesity) in the host immune response, immune dysregulation, and multi-organ dysfunction during critical illness. I recently discovered my passion for Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) and safe, high-quality patient care and I can confidently say that ECMO has become my main interest in Pediatric Critical Care. I am currently learning about health services research, and I am interested in evaluating how to improve the care and outcomes associated with ECMO support for pediatric cardiopulmonary failure and cardiac arrest.

Why Michigan?
Michigan has been my home since 2015. Life gave me the opportunity to move to this amazing state where I found my dream job. The University of Michigan had everything I was looking for. A strong Academic Medical Center where I could find excellence in both my clinical and research tranining. I was fortunate to find opportunities in research and then completed my Pediatric Residency here at the University of Michigan. And then I met the PICU family and knew this was my place. Everybody in the unit, from attendings, cofellows, nurse practicioners, nurses, pharmacists, respiratory therapists and techs work together to deliver the best patient care. The fellowship program is strong and committed to help each of us become the best Pediatric Intensivist we can be.

Favorite thing about Ann Arbor:
My favorite thing about Ann Arbor is that is close to my home in Brighton. Jokes aside, Ann Arbor has a lot of fun things to do from walking or hiking trails, nice restaurants to visit and lots of outdoor activities. We live by the lake where life is very peaceful and colorful. Love all 4 seasons and spending time with friends.
