Webinar highlights the factors that lead to adolescent substance use, its effects on brain development, and advice for parents and caregivers.

On March 21st, 2024, we hosted Mind Matters - Teen Substance Use: The Latest Research, Personal Stories, & Tips for Parents/Caregivers, a webinar featuring experts from the U-M Addiction Center.

Meghan Martz, Ph.D. presented on the various aspects of adolescent substance use, highlighting the critical role of prevention in fostering healthy brain development. She was joined by Joanna Quigley, M.D., Medical Director of Child & Adolescent Ambulatory Psychiatry and U-M Addiction Treatment Services, and Eliot, a courageous young individual on the path to recovery from substance use disorder. Eliot shared his personal journey, a testament to growth and inner peace found through perseverance.

Despite inspiring stories like Eliot's, societal stigma and shame continue to surround substance use disorders. Together, these presenters underscored the significance of prevention, the invaluable support of parents and caregivers, and the implementation of effective treatment strategies. Their insights serve as a compelling call to action, highlighting the potential to not only facilitate long-term recovery but also to save lives.
