Melanie Vandersluis

ABCD Study Team

What is your name? Where were you born? Where did you go to college?

My name is Melanie Vandersluis and I am from Pinckney, MI. I attended Michigan State University and graduated with my Bachelor of Science in Psychology in 2022. Go green!

What interests you about the ABCD Study/research?

During my time at MSU, I took a developmental psychology course and was immediately interested in adolescence. It’s such a formative time and learning about the varying factors that can lead to psychopathology inspired me to pursue a career in research. I wanted to know more about adolescence, and the ABCD study allows me to do just that!

How long have you worked in the department and what does your work focus on / what area do you work in?

I have worked on ABCD since May 2023, but have been a part of the BDA lab since May 2022. My research interests lie in adolescent relationships, etiology of depression, and risk and resilience. The ABCD Study has given me several opportunities to expand on my interests, including working on three manuscripts with ABCD data and collaborate with other researchers.

What are your plans after ABCD (grad school, etc.)

My goal is to get my PhD in Developmental Psychology, focusing on adolescent relationships and psychopathology. I also want to travel more and do this as much as I can!

Fun fact about yourself! What are your hobbies?

I love movies, music, and pop culture. I also am a huge trivia fan and go as often as I can! It’s a fun way to learn new things, and it’s always surprising to see what I know.

Do you have any pets?

Not at the moment, unfortunately. I am hoping to adopt a cat very soon! I had one in college, and he was the best.

What’s your favorite food or restaurant?

My favorite food is Italian. I will eat any form of pasta or pizza. I also have a huge sweet tooth and love ice cream and cookies!
