Announcing the Center for Disability Health and Wellness

On October 24th, 2019, the Michigan Medicine Executive Committee approved center status for the University of Michigan Center for Disability Health and Wellness (UM-CDHW). UM-CDHW represents a multi-disciplinary collaboration of faculty across from University of Michigan departments, schools and colleges with a mission of developing and applying innovative research, clinical, and educational strategies to address inequities in healthcare access, quality, and outcomes experienced by individuals with physical, sensory and developmental disabilities across the lifespan.

The Center’s vision is one of working in partnership with members of the disability community to ensure that all people, regardless of type or severity of disability, have full access to quality health care and to wellness activities personalized to their background, strengths and needs. Its various components and programs address research, education, community engagement and advocacy components.

The inaugural Center co-directors, Drs. Michelle Meade, PhD (Associate Professor, PM&R) and Michael McKee, MD,MPH (Associate Professor, Family Medicine) have brought together researchers, educators and clinicians across Michigan Medicine as well as the larger University in order to identify and address the health and healthcare inequities experienced by individuals with disabilities.

The Center builds on both the well-established research, educational and clinical innovation within the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, whose primary mission is to work with individuals with physical and cognitive disabilities, and on the extensive expertise of the Department of Family Medicine and their emerging M-Disability program. Other faculty involved in the initiative come from departments across the School of Medicine as well as the School of Public Health, the College of Pharmacy, the College of Engineering, the School of Information, the U-M Library System and the UM-Flint College of Health Sciences.
