PGY1 & PGY2 Combined Health-System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership

Residency Program Director:
John Clark, PharmD, MS, BCPS, FASHP

The Department of Pharmacy Services at the University of Michigan Health is recruiting applicants for a two-year PGY1 Pharmacy & PGY2 Health System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership, with option for a third fellowship year if completing an MBA. This program is ASHP accredited.

Program Purpose and Description

PGY1 pharmacy residency programs build on Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, eligible for board certification, and eligible for postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training.

PGY2 pharmacy residency programs build on Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and PGY1 pharmacy residency programs to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists in specialized areas of practice. PGY2 residencies provide residents with opportunities to function independently as practitioners by conceptualizing and integrating accumulated experience and knowledge and incorporating both into the provision of patient care that improves medication therapy. Residents who successfully complete this accredited HSPAL PGY2 pharmacy residency should possess competencies that qualify them for clinical or operational leadership careers and position them to be well-versed in all areas of pharmacy management.

This residency program is designed to prepare residents to become successful pharmacy leaders by providing a wide array of experiences with leaders in pharmacy administration, renowned clinicians, and world class experts in research, education, and population health. Upon completion of the program, residents will be prepared to accept leadership positions in settings throughout the health care enterprise

Minimum qualifications include: PharmD, transcript of record, three letters of reference, curriculum vitae, and eligible for Michigan Licensure.

Program Assessment Strategy

The program is structured in accordance with the ASHP Accreditation Standards and ASHP Educational Outcomes, Goals, and Objectives for a PGY1 Pharmacy and PGY2 Health-System Pharmacy Administration residency and utilizes the Residency Learning System model. This program has a four-part assessment strategy of learning experiences: resident evaluation of learning experience, resident evaluation of preceptor, resident self-evaluation, and preceptor evaluation of the resident's performance during the learning experience.

Example Schedule

Fellowship Year

  • All HSPAL residents completing the University of Michigan Ross or University of Wisconsin Consortium MBA program will be expected to complete a third fellowship year.
  • The fellowship year is intended to provide the resident with an opportunity to apply all that they have learned in the previous two years. The fellow will either be assigned as an interim manager to an area or department in need, or as an assistant manager to an existing manager/director.
  • This year is intended to provide the resident with an additional year of experience under the guidance of Michigan Medicine pharmacy leaders.
  • Fellowship Goal: To have the fellow serve as either an interim manager in an area without a manager or to serve in a leadership role supporting the Department as follows:
    • To manage personnel and an aspect of pharmacy operations
    • To complete a project or projects of importance and need to the department or health system
  • During the course of the year the fellow will be assessed for potential as a manager for a permanent role at Michigan Medicine.
  • Upon completion of the third year the fellow completes their obligation to Michigan Medicine.
  • If the resident does not complete the third year they are required to re-pay Michigan Medicine $30,000 of the salary supplement paid to them over the year.
  • Since the fellowship positions are classified in the Michigan Medicine HR system as pharmacy residents (not managers) they will continue with the same health benefits they had during the first 2 years.
  • Paid time off will accrue the same as a starting pharmacist (16 hours/month).
  • Compensation - salary the third year will be $105,000 or as per the letter of acceptance.
  • Manager positions occasionally become open due to vacancy or newly created positions.
    • If a manager position becomes available during the PGY2 or fellowship year the PGY2 resident or fellow can apply for the position (along with any other applicants), however there is no guarantee that they will get that job. This is the same process that is followed for all positions.
    • If a PGY2 resident or fellow does get the manager job, then their salary the first year as a manager will be $95,000.
  • Attendance at, and support for, professional development conferences will be handled the same as for other managers. There is neither a requirement nor expectation that the fellow will attend the same conferences that they did as a resident.
  • The fellow will participate in HSPAL residency advisory committee meetings. They will also support the topic discussions and coffee talks as any other manager.
  • The fellow will meet on a monthly basis with the Chief Pharmacy Officer along with their supervisor to assure they are overseeing personnel and operations as intended as well as to check on the status of assigned work.

Master’s Coursework

The Health System Pharmacy Administration (HSPAL) residency at the University of Michigan is designed to train exceptional future pharmacy managers and leaders. Managing contemporary pharmacy services in a large health system is very similar to running a mid-size company. Furthermore, it is expected that our graduates will rise to administrative positions that require not only pharmacy specific knowledge and skills, but also significant business knowledge. A master’s degree in business administration (MBA) provides the optimal training for developing business proposals, analyzing finances, and understanding the business language of others at the highest levels of any organization. As such, all graduates of our program will be expected to have this level of education and training.  The MBA requirement is waived for residents who have already earned this degree.

Since 2018, the MBA at the Ross Business school has been the degree we have supported and preferred, but now offer alternatives.

Option 1: University of Michigan Ross School of Business MBA

All applicants to the HSPAL residency will need to apply to the Stephen M. Ross School of Business Online MBA program. However, this does not need to occur until after match results come back.  This requirement is waived for candidates who have already completed an MBA, or will be expected to complete one before starting the HSPAL residency. The Ross Business School has agreed to waive the application fee for applicants to our residency program. GRE/GMAT are waived for individuals who will have a PharmD at the time of beginning of residency. Applicants should get everything ready to go before starting the on-line application process. In the application, select the button, "I am currently enrolled in another University of Michigan degree program.". Ross will provide you with a code to enter when they submit the application which will serve as "payment". The code you are provided is only valid for 24 hours after it is sent, so you need to be ready to submit the application before requesting the code. Please contact us with any questions.

  • Online MBA Program
    • Duration of MBA is a 3-year program and starts in the 1st year of residency and finishing in your 3rd year fellowship at Michigan Medicine. This allows for increased flexibility in class schedule
    • Application may be completed after you match in the residency program.
    • The quality of the classes and instructors are exactly the same as the traditional weekend MBA program.
    • Residents enrolled can take as little as 2 classes per semester, but it is recommended to take 3-4 classes per semester.
    • There is flexibility with timing. Each class is 7 days per week, one at a time, with every 2 weeks synchronous with the live-stream class.

For more information please visit the Ross online MBA website: https://michiganross.umich.edu/graduate/online-mba

Application Information

  • The graduate school application is separate from the residency application.
  • For candidates interested in starting in August 2024, the Final Application Deadline is May 13, 2024.

Finances (Dependent on Financial situation at Michigan Medicine)

  • Tuition for the academic years 2023-2024 for the Ross Online MBA program is $118,000 for a Michigan in-state student and $128,000 for an out-of-state student.
  • To assist with tuition, UMHS Pharmacy will supplement the resident’s stipend, above the usual stipend amount.
  • For an in-state student from 2024-2027 this tuition support will be:

  • Residents are responsible for all tuition payments.
  • If accepted, a $2,000 down payment is required before classes start (approximately March of the year prior) to hold your seat.  This money will then be used towards your tuition cost.
  • Resident’s salaries are taxable income; thus the salary supplement will not totally pay for the tuition amount. The resident thus bears part of the cost of the MBA.
  • Residents who do not participate in the Ross MBA program because they already have the degree will be paid the same salary as other PGY1 and PGY2 residents.
