DLHS’ MEL-STaR center among AHRQ and PCORI funding commitment to training LHS scientists

Director of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), Robert Otto Valdez, Ph.D., M.H.S.A.,and Executive Director of the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI), Nakela L. Cook, M.D., M.P.H., announced their commitment to strengthening investment in learning health system scientist training.

Drs. Valdez and Cook discussed their recent partnership investment through the Learning Health System Embedded Scientist Training and Research (LHS E-StaR) Centers.

DLHS is among 16 centers funded by the AHRQ and PCORI LHS E-STaR grants. DLHS’ MEL-STaR center was launched on January 1, 2024.

The AHRQ and PCORI leaders described the LHS E-StaR initiative as vital since it fits within the mission of both agencies to “make best possible use of data, ensur(e) that evidence is understood and used…and …improv(e) healthcare delivery and outcomes by producing and promoting high-integrity, evidence-based information from research guided by patients, caregivers, and the broader health and healthcare community.”

The Learning Health System Scientists training was described as essential “to close the gap from discovery to the use of knowledge in practice and to facilitate rapid implementation of evidence to improve quality of care and patient outcomes.”
