DLHS Conversations Series: Data Visualization Project

HILS PhD students John O’Malley, Jennylee Swallow, and Marisa Conte present their research on electronic health record adoption and patient access, for which they won the 2022 Health Dataviz Challenge sponsored by the National Center for Health Statistics and Academy Health. Their interactive Tableau visualization demonstrates that while the HITECH Act was highly successful at promoting EHR adoption by providers, that does not mean patients can access their health data. Indeed, their research using the National Electronic Health Records Survey and the Health Information National Trends Survey shows large disparities in patient portal access, with low-SES patients especially left behind.
