On Wednesday, December 6th, 2023, Michigan Medicine hosted a livestream, "Mind Matters: Beyond Borders" that featured visiting Prechter Program scholar, Frances Adiukwu, M.D., and U-M Psychiatrist, Heidi Burns, M.D. During the livestream, Dr. Adiukwu and Dr. Burns spoke about their experiences as psychiatrists in Nigeria and Ghana. They touched on topics that included stigma toward being a mental health provider and the stigma their patients faced when seeking mental health care, the unique West African family dynamics that influence medical decisions, and the ways in which collaboration is one of our greatest tools to improving mental health care access and treatment across the U.S. and Africa.
Dr. Adiukwu also spoke about her time at the University of Michigan as a visiting scholar at the Prechter Program and her interest in studying bipolar disorder and other mood disorders.
