The determinants of complication trajectories in American Indians with type 2 diabetes

Key Points:

Type 2 diabetes (T2D) and obesity are associated with the development of nerve and kidney damage. This clinical study of American Indians with long-standing T2D and obesity investigated the impact of improved metabolic health, i.e., weight loss, improved blood fat levels, on their development of peripheral neuropathy and kidney damage over time. Unfortunately, even though participants lost weight and became more metabolically healthy, they continued to experience progressive nerve and kidney damage. Thus, this study stresses the importance of early interventions to improve metabolic health before nerve and kidney damage begins.
