In late February, Leaning and Health Sciences Chair, Dr. Charles Friedman, and Dr. J. Douglas Engel (Department of Cell and Development Biology) traveled to Sendai, Japan to co-lead an international workshop focused on rebuilding the health infrastructure following the March 11, 2011 earthquake. Held at the Tohoku University Medical School, the purpose of the workshop was to introduce the Learning Health System concept and to explore its specific applicability to the health infrastructure in the Tohoku region, which was left in near ruins following the earthquake and resulting tsunami four years ago. Participants included representatives from Japan, the US, the Netherlands, England, and Taiwan.
