John E. McGillicuddy, M.D.

John E. McGillicuddy, M.D. was born in Ashland, Massachusetts in 1941. He grew up there and attended high school, graduating in 1958. In 1962, he graduated Cum Laude from the College of the Holy Cross with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. He attended Dartmouth Medical School, receiving a bachelor of Medical Sciences Degree in 1964 and then Harvard Medical School, graduating in 1966 with an M.D. He completed an internship and one year of general surgery residency at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, Virginia in 1968. He then served on active duty with the United States Navy, including service in Vietnam, completing his service obligation in 1970. From 1970-1974 he was a resident in neurosurgery at the University of Michigan and then was recruited to stay on as faculty. He became an Assistant Professor in 1976, an Associate Professor of Neurosurgery in 1980, and a Professor of Neurosurgery in 1998. His initial career interests were in cerebrovascular surgery and states of increased intracranial pressure and he had numerous publications and presentations in these fields. Later in his career, Dr. McGillicuddy helped to establish the Spinal Surgery Program at the University of Michigan. He subsequently directed much of his attention to the practice of reconstructive spinal surgery. Since finishing his residency, he has had a particular interest in peripheral nerve surgery, and has written and published extensively in this field. His particular areas of interest include brachial plexus injuries, thoracic outlet syndrome and obstetric brachial plexus palsy.

Dr. McGillicuddy has served on numerous committees within the University of Michigan and on state and national committees. He was the Chairman of the Stroke Section of the Michigan Heart Association for several years and a member of the Executive Committee of the Joint Section on Spine and Peripheral Nerve for five years in the 1990's.

He is a past President of the Society of University Neurosurgeons and a past Vice President of the Neurosurgical Society of America.

Dr. McGillicuddy is now semi-retired and concentrating on peripheral nerve surgery and especially birth-related brachial plexus palsies.
