Critical Care - Director of Operations

Position Summary:

The Director of Operations for the Department of Emergency Medicine Division of Critical Care is an experienced physician leader and administrator with specific knowledge in emergency critical care delivery. This individual serves as the Medical Director of the Joyce and Don Massey Emergency Critical Care Center (EC3) and leads all facets of critical care delivery in Adult Emergency Service (AES). This individual reports to the Division Chief of Critical Care, AES MPLAN Medical Director, and Department Chair of Emergency Medicine, and works collaboratively with the AES Service Chief and nursing leadership.

Key Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the Medical Director of EC3 and leads its administration, operations, and clinical care delivery in collaboration with the AES MPLAN Medical Director
  • Develop and implement clinical procedures, order sets, policies, and guidelines to provide timely care to critically ill patients in AES and to ensure their continuity of care with the inpatient units
  • Lead collaborative inter- and intra-departmental operational and quality improvement initiatives with the Division Chief of Critical Care, nursing leadership, and other key stakeholders
  • Represent the Division of Critical Care at institutional engagements including Division of Critical Care meetings, Department of Emergency Medicine faculty meetings, and Critical Care Steering Committee meetings
  • Serve as the point of contact for Department of Emergency Medicine patients, providers, and Peer Review Committee on topics related to emergency critical care
  • Facilitate schedule coordination for trainees, physician assistants, and faculty in EC3 with residency/fellowship program directors, physician assistant leadership, and AES Service Chief
  • Represent the Division of Critical Care at emergency medicine and critical care society meetings such as SAEM, ACEP, and SCCM
  • Serve as an expert resource to other institutions that are developing emergency critical care delivery models

Qualifications and Key Attributes:

  • BC/BE Emergency Medicine and Critical Care
  • Works clinically in AES and EC3
  • University of Michigan Department of Emergency Medicine faculty member
  • Excellent clinical and communication skills
  • Committed to providing high-quality, evidenced-based care to a diverse patient population
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with, support, and lead peers and other stakeholders to drive division and departmental success
  • Demonstrated ability to integrate technology and innovation into clinical practice, process improvement, and/or research
  • Demonstrated initiative, accountability, and attention to detail

Appointment and Effort:

  • 0.20 FTE
  • Appointed by Department Chair with input from the Division Chief of Critical Care and AES MPLAN Medical Director
  • Three-year term with re-appointment based on performance
