The Pavilion at University of Michigan Health will be the name of the new Michigan Medicine hospital currently under construction, the organization has announced.

Work on the project resumed this spring after a pause in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The new adult inpatient facility is scheduled to open for patient care in the fall of 2025.

“The Pavilion at University of Michigan Health will offer the excellence in complex care that U-M patients are used to in a comforting facility that incorporates the latest innovations in health care delivery,” said Marschall S. Runge, M.D., Ph.D., the executive vice president of medical affairs for U-M, CEO of Michigan Medicine and dean of the medical school.

The planned 12-story hospital will house 264 patient rooms capable of converting to intensive care, advanced imaging and 20 operating rooms for high-level neurological, cardiovascular and thoracic cases.

“We’re excited to begin calling the new facility The Pavilion,” said David Miller, M.D., M.P.H., president of the U-M Health System.

“When it opens, our patients will see the word ‘Pavilion’ to indicate the location of their procedures on digital maps, signage and other wayfinding tools across the Michigan Medicine medical campus.”

All patient rooms in the new hospital will be private, to improve patient safety, quality and experience, while creating space for family members to participate in their loved one’s care, healing and recovery. The project also allows for relocating some semi-private rooms from University Hospital to increase private rooms there.

Runge noted this isn’t the first time the word “pavilion” has been used at U-M: the first Pavilion Hospital opened in 1876 as an extension to the original University Hospital.
