Student COVID-19 Response

Within hours of their classes being paused due to COVID-19, our med students sprung into action to see where they could put their talents and energy to good use. Here are some of the ways they are serving as helpers:

Med students organize COVID donations

M-Response Corps

Students keep expanding ways to get involved and give support to the front-line workers so they can stay focused on patient care. Their efforts range from collecting and sorting PPE items and grocery shopping for seniors, to calling patients at home, providing childcare, training as Respiratory Therapist Extenders (see below) and offering patient companionship so that no one dies alone.

COVID Staffing Project

The COVID Staffing Project is a free online resource to support hospitals and front line providers during the COVID-19 crisis. A few of our med students contributed behind the scenes to create this open source site along with a team of software developers, administrators, engineers, big data analysts, social scientists, and clinicians from Michigan Medicine and Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

As part of the planning efforts at Michigan Medicine, several med students have been trained and are working as Respiratory Therapist Extenders (RTE), and more than a dozen med students have volunteered to provide end-of-life care to patients whose families are unable to do so under hospital visitor restrictions.

Serving Behind the Scenes

M2 Ruth shares a personal look at what the shift in focus from the classroom to helping in new ways has impacted her med school life.

New Pandemic Course

Med students worked closely with faculty advisors to quickly develop and deploy a new required course about pandemics for second- and third-year med students. This open course is available to all med students with plans to expand to interprofessional partnerships as well.
