The center, also known as CBSSM, is one of the premier intellectual gathering places of clinicians, social scientists, bioethicists and others interested in improving individual and societal health through application of social science and bioethics methods to health research, education and public outreach. The center also serves as the home of the Program in Clinical Ethics.
A member of the medical school faculty since 2006, Jagsi is a professor and deputy chair in the Department of Radiation Oncology. Within CBSSM, she studies issues of bioethics arising from cancer care, including resource allocation issues, conflicts of interest and the ethical issues that arise from data collection and use in health systems. She also studies gender issues, including studies of women’s representation in the senior ranks of academic medicine, barriers to their advancement and interventions intended to increase their representation.
A graduate of Harvard Medical School, Jagsi served as a fellow in the Center for Ethics at Harvard and also completed her doctorate in social policy at Oxford University as a Marshall Scholar. Her medical research focuses on improving the quality of care received by breast cancer patients, both by advancing the ways in which breast cancer is treated with radiation and by advancing the understanding of patient decision-making, cost and access to appropriate care.
Jagsi has been elected to the American Society of Clinical Investigation, the board of directors of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the steering committee of the Association of American Medical Colleges Group on Women in Medicine and Science. She is author of more than 150 publications in peer-reviewed journals and is funded by multiple independent grants from the National Institutes of Health and philanthropic foundations.
