Biography
Dr. Malas received his Doctor of Medicine and Master of Public Health from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. He completed combined training in Pediatrics, General Psychiatry, and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.
Dr. Malas currently holds a dual appointment in the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and the Department of Pediatrics. Dr. Malas served as the Director of the Pediatric Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry Service at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital from 2014-2023. In 2020, Dr. Malas was appointed Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Service Chief within the Department of Psychiatry and was later selected to serve as Division Director for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry within the Department of Psychiatry in 2023, where he also serves as an Associate Chair for the Department. His areas of clinical and academic interest include pediatric delirium, neuropsychiatric disease, agitation and aggression care, somatic symptom and related disorders and motivational interviewing. He is closely involved in program development, quality improvement and improving systems of care in mental health.
Within Michigan Medicine, Dr. Malas is co-chair of the C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital’s Mental Health Quality and Safety Subcommittee and is the Primary Investigator for the Youth Suicide Prevention Initiative utilizing a Zero Suicide Framework at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital. He has co-authored several clinical practice guidelines and protocols to support standardized, evidence-based care for youth with co-morbid mental health concerns in pediatric care settings.
Dr. Malas has been engaged in numerous local, regional, and national leadership activities. Within the State of Michigan, Dr. Malas has served on the Michigan Governor’s Commission on School Mental Health and Safety as well as the Michigan Clinical Consultation and Care Community Board, where he is leading an initiative to expand teleconsultation services to emergency departments in Michigan. Dr. Malas has previously served on the National Editorial Board for the Psychiatry Residency In-Training Examination (PRITE) for two terms and currently curates educational content and board-style questions for the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Clinical Essentials Committee. Additionally, Dr. Malas is the Co-Chair of the Physically Ill Child Committee through the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Membership Chair and Executive Board Member for the American Academy of Directors of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, as well as serves on the Executive Board of the American Association for Emergency Psychiatry.
