Microscope Core

The Department of Pediatrics' Core Imaging Facility provides pediatric research investigators access to a variety of equipment to meet their day-to-day research needs and provides a complement to the more comprehensive imaging facilities available in the Microscopy and Image Analysis (MIL) Laboratory and MDRTC Morphology and Image Analysis Core.

Location:  8328 MSRB III
Hours of operation:  Monday-Friday, 8-6:00 PM
Contact:  Linda Kalikin, PhD, Core Director

Access to computer workstations associated with individual microscopes is restricted.
Please email the Core Director ([email protected]) to be added to the Facility’s “user list”.

 Equipment

Leica DM IRE2 Inverted Microscope

Leica DM IRE2 inverted fluorescent microscope provides bright field phase contrast, and fluorescence microscopy. The microscope has long-working distance dry objectives (10X, 20X and 40X) that allow visualization of cultured live cells. A 100X oil objective is also provided. The microscope stage has several interchangeable adaptors to accommodate microscope slides and different tissue culture dishes and plates. Fluorescent filter sets are available for UV, FITC, Rhodamine/Cy3/Texas Red, GFP and YFP. Images are captured using a digital QImaging Retiga 2000R high sensitivity grayscale CCD camera, which is the most sensitive camera for low light/fluorescence. Image capture is driven by ImagePro 6.3 software that also provides some morphometric analysis and captured images are compatible with other high-end morphometric software.

Leica DM RD Upright

Leica DM RD upright fluorescent microscope provides bright field, DIC, phase contrast and fluorescence microscopy. The microscope has a full-range of dry objectives (2.5X, 5X, 10X, 20X and 40X) as well as a 100X Oil objective. Fluorescent filter sets are available for DAPI/UV, FITC, Rhodamine and CY5. Images are captured using a digital QImaging Retiga 1200 high sensitivity grayscale CCD camera driven by ImagePro software. The ImagePro software also provides some morphometric analysis and captured images are compatible with other high-end morphometric software.

Olympus SZX12 stereo dissecting microscope with low to medium zoom magnifications. This microscope can be operated in brightfield and darkfield combined with two separate fiber optic lightsources.

Zeiss Axio Imager M1 microscope, motorized, with brightfield and fluorescence capacity that includes both 63X and 100X oil objectives, a digital CCD camera, and FISH imaging capture and analysis software. It is primarily used for capturing high power images, such as chromosomes or individual cells. (Location: 3530 MSRB I; contact Hande Kocak in Keegan Lab.)
