The Pediatric Vascular Anomalies Program at the University of Michigan combines the expertise of pediatric neurosurgeons, interventional radiologists, neurologists, and pediatric intensivists to treat children with abnormalities of the blood vessels in the brain and spinal cord. Such anomalies include abnormal outpouchings in the walls of blood vessels (aneurysms), abnormal connections between arteries and veins (arteriovenous malformations), or congenital blockage of the arteries to the brain (Moyamoya disease), among other vascular problems. Untreated vascular anomalies in children may result in bleeding, ischemic stroke, or heart failure. The team at the University of Michigan, which includes a fellowship-trained pediatric neurosurgeon specializing in vascular diseases, has extensive experience in the treatment of these complex diseases though both endovascular and open surgical therapies.
