Preliminary Year

All residents must successfully complete a preliminary medicine internship meeting the standards of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. All of the positions come with a matched internship with the University of Michigan Department of Internal Medicine. You do not have to apply separately or interview separately to match into this internship.

The internship at the University of Michigan includes ample training in general internal medicine and intensive care medicine.

During PGY1, all residents spend on month on the neurology consult service, 2 weeks in the neuro-ICU, and 2 weeks doing neurology consults at the VA Hospital. In June of the PGY1 year, all residents simultaneously rotate through a unique non-clinical educational rotation the Neurology "Boot Camp."

The goal of the Boot Camp is to help residents gain confidence with the neurologic examination, localization, emergency care, teaching, and common disease presentations. The largely non-clinical curriculum includes case-based learning, localization games, team-building exercises, independent study, and workshops on topics such as lumbar puncture, sign-outs, and the neurologic examination.  A significant proportion of the rotation is dedicated to helping residents becoming effective teachers and communicators.

During Boot Camp, our residents film educational (and sometimes silly) videos for our residency program YouTube channel. Here are some highlights:
