Welcome to the Division of Metabolism, Endocrinology & Diabetes (MEND). We have a long and illustrious history in academic endocrinology, of which we are very proud. With over 80 faculty members including primary and secondary appointees, emeritus, and adjunct faculty, we offer expansive and exceptional research and care in a variety of endocrinology disorders and diseases.
Peter Arvan, MD, PhD, is Chief of the Division of Metabolism, Endocrinology & Diabetes (MEND), and is a Professor of Internal Medicine and Molecular and Integrative Physiology. He received his bachelor's degree from Cornell University and his MD and PhD degrees from Yale University. Following residency training in Internal Medicine, Dr. Arvan completed fellowship training in Endocrinology at Yale. He then joined the faculty at Harvard Medical School in 1988. He moved to the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York in 1996 and became Division Chief at the University of Michigan in 2003.
Dr. Arvan's research group is located within the Brehm Tower - which houses a group of highly accomplished basic and clinical investigators focused on finding new therapies that better treat diabetes and other endocrine diseases. His laboratory is funded by public research support (National Institutes of Health) as well as private research support. His research work has focused on hormone synthesis, especially in two areas: thyroid hormone synthesis and insulin synthesis. He is specifically interested in understanding how the proteins that are hormone precursors are made and converted into medically-active hormones, and how these steps go wrong in various endocrine diseases.
Dr. Arvan's area of greatest clinical expertise is in the management of thyroid disease, especially causes and treatments of hypo- and hyper-thyroidism and their associated disorders. He formerly served as Editorial Board member of the journal Thyroid and The Journal of Biological Chemistry.
Dr. Arvan has received numerous awards and honors. He was elected as a member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation and the American Association of Physicians. He was named as a Pfizer Visiting Professor, a Burroughs-Wellcome Visiting Professor, the Sidney Ingbar Lecturer at Beth Israel-Deaconess Hospital (Boston), and is the Brehm Professor of Diabetes Research at the University of Michigan.

Our clinical faculty provide expert care for patients with a large number of endocrinological and metabolic conditions including diabetes mellitus, osteoporosis, pituitary diseases, thyroid diseases, adrenal diseases, abnormalities in the reproductive axis, obesity, and hyperlipidemia. We also service ongoing clinical programs for obesity and gestational diabetes, and oversee the inpatient hyperglycemia program, which is predicated on the evidence that improved glucose control limits hospital-acquired infections, improves wound healing, and shortens patients length of stay.
Patient care is provided at the University of Michigan Health hospital and at outpatient facilities, including our MEND-Podiatry Clinic at Domino's Farms, Rogel Cancer Center, and U-M Health centers in East Ann Arbor, Northville, Brighton, Chelsea, and Saline.
Our internationally recognized mission of basic science research includes cutting-edge investigations in the areas of diabetes, obesity, thyroid, adrenal, pituitary, and neuroendocrine diseases. Studies are conducted at the molecular, cellular, and physiological levels using a wide range of model systems. We receive approximately $10 million in direct costs per year in NIH funding, plus additional industry and foundation grants.
Education and Training
The MEND Division is committed to preparing physicians and scientists of tomorrow. We have a Endocrinology Fellowship Training Program, Podiatry Fellowship Training Program, and Multidisciplinary Postdoctoral Training Program in Basic Diabetes Research.
Our division hosts several annual educational opportunities each year, including the Stefan S. Fajans Lecture in Diabetes, John C. Floyd, Jr. Memorial Fellows Lecture in Endocrinology, and David E. Schteingart Lecture in the Division of Metabolism, Endocrinology and Diabetes. We also hold regularly scheduled conferences, including our weekly clinical and research conferences, that feature the latest findings by our physicians, researchers from other areas of Michigan Medicine, and invited guest speakers.
