The mission of the Hospital Medicine Education Committee is to provide an unparalleled learning experience in an optimal educational environment for learners of all levels. Its goals include organizing, creating, and leading scholastic projects and activities within the educational domain, and enhancing the professional growth of hospitalists by enabling the development and honing of their teaching and mentorship skills.

Examples of the Committee’s Work 

  • Curricular development and implementation for a variety of learners such as students from the University of Michigan Medical School, University of Michigan School of Nursing, physician assistant programs, and the University of Michigan School of Biomedical Engineering.
  • Creating programs aimed at optimizing feedback and weekly hand-offs of student performance to promote learner entrustment.
  • Reviewing, innovating, and improving the quality of a variety of faculty educational conferences (Journal Club, Case Conference, Hospital Medicine Grand Rounds, Morbidity and Mortality meetings etc.)
  • Leading faculty development programs such as peer-to-peer observation of teaching, boot camp for teaching residents on the wards, use of point-of-care ultrasound for bedside procedures, etc.
  • Selecting the recipient of the annual Henry Fitzbutler Award for Excellence in Hospital Medicine. This Departmental award is conferred upon the fourth-year medical student who best displays clinical and scholarly excellence in the field of Hospital Medicine. The award honors the life and accomplishments of Dr. Henry Fitzbutler, the first African American to graduate from the University of Michigan Medical School in 1872 - a true leader in the University of Michigan’s medical history.
