John M. Carethers, MD, AGAF, received his bachelor’s degree in biological sciences and his medical degree from Wayne State University in Detroit. Dr. Carethers completed his residency at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston followed by his gastroenterology fellowship at University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. After establishing his career at the University of California, San Diego, Dr. Carethers returned to the University of Michigan Health System in 2009 to take on his current position as the John G. Searle professor of internal medicine and chair of the department of internal medicine.
Dr. Carethers’ research programs focus on familial colon cancer and polyposis syndromes including familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP). These research activities have also focused on hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC), juvenile polyposis, hyperplastic polyposis, and colorectal cancer.
An active member of AGA for more than 20 years, Dr. Carethers was the recipient of the AGA Gastrointestinal Oncology Section Research Mentor Award as well as the AGA Distinguished Mentor Award in 2017. Dr. Carethers has served on several AGA committees, including the AGA Nominating Committee, AGA Underrepresented Minorities Committee, AGA Research Policy Committee, AGA Institute Council and early in his career on the AGA Trainee & Young GI Committee. He has also served as section editor of Gastroenterology. Dr. Carethers joins the AGA Governing Board in June 2020 as vice president and will next serve as president-elect before taking over as president in 2022.
