Dr. Athey’s research interests are in the creation and use of bioinformatics pipelines and machine learning methods to radically improve the efficacy of psychiatric pharmacogenomics—allowing patients to take the most effective drug for their illness and suffer the fewest side effects. His collaboration through the Michigan Medicine-Peking University Health Science Center Joint Institute aims to validate a new pharmacogenomic/ metabolomic diagnostic assay system for Bipolar Disorder-1 (BPD-1) medication selection in a Chinese population.
