Biography
Dr. Brendan Byrne is an assistant professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine of the University of Michigan Medical School.
He works clinically at the University Hospital ED and the LTC Charles Kettles Ann Arbor VA Medical Center ED. His prehospital work includes diving medicine for the Washtenaw County Underwater Search and Rescue Team, as well as the current Director of Tactical EMS for the WLMCA.
Dr. Byrne earned his bachelor’s in French Literature and Language from the University of Michigan and his medical degree from Wayne State University. He did his internship at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, Virginia, then graduated from the Diving Medical Officer Course at the US Navy Dive and Salvage Training Center and the Undersea Medical Officer Course at the Naval Undersea Medical Institute. His specialty training and Chief Residency was completed at Sinai-Grace Hospital/Detroit Medical Center/Wayne State University’s affiliated program.
He is still a member of the Navy Reserves, where he works as an Undersea Medical Officer and serves as the Specialty Leader for Navy Reserve Emergency Medicine.
Academic interests include Tactical Medicine, Ethics, Diving Medicine and Wilderness Medicine.
