Section Head of Adult Palliative Medicine

The Section Head for Adult Palliative Medicine will have oversight and coordination for Divisional Palliative Medicine clinical, research, and educational programs within the Department of Internal Medicine (DOIM) and Division of Geriatric and Palliative Medicine (DGPM).

Scope of Responsibility Includes:

  1. Provide vision, direction, and coordination for adult hospice and palliative medicine (HPM) efforts within the DOIM/DGPM
  2. Build a local and national reputation for the University of Michigan in HPM where others would want to emulate our model
  3. Directly supervise and coordinate with the Director of the Hospice and Palliative Medicine, and the Director of the integrated Geriatrics and Hospice and Palliative Medicine fellowship programs
  4. Have financial oversight and responsibility for the Adult Palliative Medicine Section within DOIM/DGPM at the University of Michigan
  5. Report to and engage with the Adult Palliative Medicine Executive Steering Committee on success, challenges, coordination, and strategy for the University of Michigan Adult Palliative Medicine Section
  6. Be actively engaged in the tripartite mission (research, education and clinical) efforts of the Adult Palliative Medicine Section
  7. Promote a model of excellence for Adult Palliative Medicine
  8. Engage in coordinating inpatient and outpatient efforts, and networking relationships with research and educational opportunities for trainees and faculty
  9. Participate in recruitment efforts for faculty and staff as appropriate
  10. Perform faculty evaluations for the primary HPM faculty in the Division of Geriatric and Palliative Medicine

Reporting Relationships: The Section Head of Adult Palliative Medicine will report to, coordinate and strategize with the Chief of the Division of Geriatric and Palliative Medicine, where the Section Head must meet criteria for a primary appointment. In addition, the Section Head will work with the Adult Palliative Medicine Executive Steering Committee for programmatic and coordination issues related to HPM.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Valid and unrestricted Michigan Medical and Controlled Substance Licenses, as well as a valid and unrestricted U.S. DEA license
  • Current board certification in a primary specialty, and board certification in Hospice and Palliative Medicine
  • Eligible for UM Medical School faculty membership
  • Demonstrated leadership ability that may include in the areas of education, research, and/or clinical care
  • Eligible for a primary appointment in the Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Geriatric and Palliative Medicine
  • Meet criteria for appointment at the Assistant Professor level or higher for the UM Medical School

This position will be supported for 0.2 FTE, start-up funds, and will receive administrative support commensurate with its scope.

Instructional & Clinical Track Faculty Positions

The Division of Geriatric and Palliative Medicine (GPM) seeks applicants for faculty positions to meet our expanding needs in caring for our older adults. We are looking to recruit faculty in both instructional and clinical tracks. 

We provide clinical services at the University of Michigan (outpatient clinics and consult service), unit for Acute Care for Elderly (ACE), Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF service), and long-term care (LTC). Candidates must be board certified in Internal Medicine and BC/BE in Geriatrics and/or Palliative Care (eventual board certification required) and are expected to have a commitment to outstanding patient care with an interest in teaching, academic medicine, and scholarship. Rank and salary are commensurate with experience.
